IPOH: Two men were killed while another was injured when an old building collapsed on their car in Jalan Kamaruddin Isa near Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here at 9.30 last night.

Perak police chief Datuk Zulkifli Abdullah said the two victims killed were passengers of the car. "The driver suffered serious injuries and was admitted to hospital," he told reporters at the scene of the incident.

The identity of the two Malay men in the 20s had not been ascertained. The drivers and passengers of three other cars escaped unhurt. Their cars were slightly damaged by falling fragments.

Zulkifli said police were investigating what caused the collapse and whether work to demolish to building was being done when the incident occured.

"Initial information available showed that work to demolish the building started since morning. We will investigate to see whether the work was done according to procedures."

Zulkifli said firemen spent about one hour to remove the two bodies stuck in the Perodua Viva. Meanwhile, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir who visited the site had directed Ipoh City Council (MBI) to investigate whether the demolition work was done according to procedures.-Bernama
