PETALING JAYA (July 16): The state government down south plans to build between 2,000 and 3,000 units of Johor Affordable Homes (RMMJ) this year.

Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Osman Sapian said his government was committed to building 100,000 affordable RMMJ units over the next half decade, reported The Star.

“We will also ensure only first time houseowners and eligible recipients get the affordable houses,” the daily reported Osman saying at an event to meet the Indian community at Taman Johor Jaya multipurpose hall, Johor Bahru yesterday.

Osman assured that the state authorities would be transparent in allocating the RMMJ homes.

He also revealed that the “political quota” for such affordable homes has been removed, reported The Star.

In another report by the same publication, the state government has been called to take action against civil servants found to be abusing their power in the allocation of affordable homes.

The Star reported that Johor Consumers Movement Association chairman Md Salleh Sadijo said those in charge of the allocation of affordable homes must be strictly monitored to prevent abuse.

“Stern action should include legal action against them, instead of just transferring them from the State Secretary Housing Office to other departments or agencies,” Salleh said.

“This is not a new issue as it has been going on for many years but has not been effectively addressed.”
