KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 31): Melbourne’s citizens tasted a “first weekend of relative freedom” after an almost four-month lockdown to combat the Covid-19 epidemic, Reuters reported today.
Many are visiting parks, tennis courts, restaurants and shops with a vengeance.
Cases in Australia’s Victoria state have plummeted to allow residents this “freedom”, with health authorities reporting just one new Covid-19 case and no deaths today.
The state was seeing “average daily new cases” of up to 700 in July and early August.
"We need to enjoy our lives after three months of really constrained activity," Reuters reported Victoria chief health officer Brett Sutton saying at a media conference last week.
But it is still not total freedom yet as there are still “travel restrictions” while places such as libraries and cinemas are still closed in Melbourne.
More easing of restrictions are supposed to be announced on Nov 9.
