KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 31): Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin claimed today that it was her constitutional rights to leave PKR, citing the right of association, which espouses an individual’s freedom of association in Malaysia.
Zuraida said this today in her High Court defence filing against PKR’s lawsuit, which alleges that she violated an agreement she had with the political party when she left the group.
High Court deputy registrar Norhatini Abd Hamid on Dec 15 directed former PKR vice-president Zuraida to file her defence by today, following case management conducted via the High Court’s e-review on Dec 15.
It was reported that PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail on Sept 28 filed the suit via law firm Messrs William Leong & Co against Zuraida.
Today, Zuraida also alleged that PKR had deviated from its original cause when Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim helmed the party as its president.
Zuraida claimed that the path taken by Anwar, who is also Malaysia’s opposition leader, led her to leave the party.

She said two witnesses, who claimed to be victims of Anwar’s alleged sexual misconduct, will be called in as defence witnesses in her trial.
At the time of writing today, Anwar had not issued a statement in response to Zuraida’s allegations.
