GEORGE TOWN (Nov 21): Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) has opened a tender for the appointment of a consultant to conduct a study on the Penang light rail transit (LRT) project.

State Infrastructure and Transport Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari told the Penang State Legislative Assembly sitting here on Tuesday that the study is expected to be ready by early next year and would provide more details about the Penang LRT project.

He was replying to a question from Gooi Hsiao-Leung (PKR-Bukit Tengah) regarding the detailed information and scope of the Penang LRT project.

Zairil Khir added that the implementation of the LRT project is pending a decision by the Transport Ministry to finalise the implementation methods and technical details, namely the alignments and locations of the LRT stations.

As such, he said that details of the costs, implementation methods and the project start date would depend on the Transport Ministry’s decision.

Zairil Khir said that the state government is committed to strengthening public transport through the implementation of the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP).

“The federal government’s announcement of a RM10 billion allocation for the implementation of the Penang LRT project to Seberang Perai is the first step toward improving the quality of life of Penangites in terms of public transport coverage, services and connections between neighbourhoods, as well as becoming a catalyst for the state’s economy,” he said.
