renovation

BUDGETING is one of the most difficult parts of planning your home renovation project. If you don't plan it well and do it right, it can cost you a fortune.

The truth is, every little thing adds up. You would be surprised by the amount of money you could save by saving a little here and there and being creative. The additional money could even buy you that home theatre system or beautiful kitchen ware you wanted but didn't think you could afford.

Here are the seven tips to save on your renovation fees!

1. Do it yourself, unless you really can’t

You do not know how and you have no skill? YouTube it! If you can learn how to apply makeup by watching YouTube videos, why not tile a floor? Try to do as much of the work as possible yourself, this is one of the best ways to save money when renovating.

2. Source your own materials

Do you know how much more is the constructor charging you for the materials? You may ask them what material to use but if possible, always source your own materials to avoid being overcharged. Visit a home deco fair or building material store often to understand the materials more and look for value deals.

3. Ask for a sample design

Are you scratching your head on the interior design before calculating your budget? Ask a contractor or material stores for a sample design and the rough budget. They will not refuse because you are a potential client. After all, to place or not to place your order is all up to you.

4. Only consider new furniture that you need

The most exciting part in a renovating project would be the selection of furniture. However, this is also the part where the budget always flies out of control. Each time you find yourself itching to buy additional furniture, stop, take a deep breath and ask yourself, "Do I need this in my new home?" If the answer is no, just quickly walk away and never look back!

5. Be prepared for extras

You should prepare an extra 10% or 20% on top of your total budget, in case of a sudden price hike on material or you unexpectedly find a part of the house that needed work.  Always bear in mind that the budget is final after the project starts.

6. Give old things new life

An antique sewing machine can be transformed into a beautiful dining table, grandma’s knitted lace might be just perfect for your coffee table, washed stones at your parent’s backyard might just be comfortable to step on while you have shower in your newly renovated bathroom. Find the hidden the treasures and give them a new life!

7. Do not rush and always compare quotations

Always plan ahead and take into account the time you will need to properly weigh your alternatives, and put contingency plans into action. Ask for quotations from at least three contractors and take the time to study each of them so you will know which is your best option.
