ALOR SETAR: Alor Setar city will get a facelift by 2012 with the completion of Plaza Tunku Yaacob, a four-star hotel and condominiums.

Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said the buildings would become new landmarks for the city under a new concept to attract tourists to the state.

"The hotel which can be upgraded to five-star will address the shortage of rooms faced by visitors to Alor Setar.

Kedah's other five-star hotels are in Langkawi," he told reporters after chairing the State Executive Council meeting here today (April 28).

Azizan said Plaza Tunku Yaacob, costing RM350 million, would include a shopping complex and would be facing Alor Setar Tower.

The RM150 million four-star hotel would be built on land owned by the Kedah State Economic Development Corp (PKNK).

He said the 15-storey hotel in Tambang Badak would have 300 rooms.

Condominiums of 21 and 23 floors would be built on a 1.5ha site owned by Bina Darulaman Bhd (BDB).

"Other than the plaza, hotel and condominiums with integrated concept, two other projects are the new campus for Kolej Universiti Insaniah and the double-track railway line," he added. -- Bernama
