KUALA LUMPUR: The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) can consider application by members to withdraw money from account two to rebuild houses destroyed by fire, Dewan Rakyat was told today (April 7).

Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin said although fire was not considered a disaster, withdrawals from account two could be made after verification by the Fire Department and police.

"EPF had approved such applications," he said in reply to a question by Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (BN-Bintulu) who wanted EPF to include fires as disasters like thunderstorms, floods and earthquakes.

"The withdrawals allowed will be based on the value of houses destroyed by fire. Destruction must be total as it will not be allowed if only the kitchen has been destroyed."

Awang Adek urged EPF to speed up processing of applications for withdrawals from account two by fire victims. -- Bernama
