KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 18): A fire at a high-rise building under construction in KL Sentral here early Wednesday contributed to massive traffic congestion along Jalan Bangsar and Jalan Tun Sambanthan after roads had to be closed to facilitate fire-fighting.
No one was injured in the fire which started at about 3am and affected the completed 30th and 31st floors of what is to be a 33-storey building.
Kuala Lumpur Fire & Rescue Operations chief Azizan Ismail said the fire spread quickly and caused burning pieces of wood and other building material to fall from the floors, posing danger to people caught in the early morning rush-hour traffic.
"We were alerted to the fire at 3.53am, and 95 firemen were rushed there in 17 trucks from fire stations in the Klang Valley," he told reporters at the scene.
Azizan said firemen had to use the scaffolding to climb up from the 26th floor to the affected floors to fight the fire which was brought under control at about 8.30am.
He said the access roads to Brickfields — Jalan Bangsar and Jalan Tun Sambanthan — have to be closed up to noon Wednesday to facilitate the fire-fighting and investigation. — Bernama
