Flat residents lament over improper refuse disposal

ALOR SETAR: It has become almost unbearable for more than 4,000 residents of the Simpang Kuala Flats near here who have been plagued by improper disposal of refuse for over a year.

Simpang Kuala Flats Federal Village Development and Security Committee chairman Zakri Hassan said the problem cropped up after E-Idaman took over the contract of refuse disposal at the end of 2009.

He said the company's workers only collected refuse in the bins and left untouched that near the bins.

"This has resulted in an accumulation of trash which leaves a stench and has become a breeding ground for flies and rats.

"Some of the workers rummage through the trash for recyclable material and cause the area to be cluttered, while pieces of refuse get carried off by the wind or animals," he told reporters during a visit to the flats.

A resident, Rohana Ibrahim, 50, said the problem has affected her daily life as well as her family's.

"There are so many flies that it's difficult for us to eat without being bothered by the insects. Since we live on the ground floor, water from the refuse that trickles into the drain, and rat carcasses give off an unbearable odour which makes it uncomfortable to stay at home," she said.

A check by Bernama found that the area surrounding the 14 flats constructed in 1985 was cluttered with trash and bore an unpleasant smell.

Another resident, Maimunah Yusup, 59, said: "We worry that residents here will be infected by all kinds of diseases if no action is taken by those responsible.

"We only want the responsible parties, especially the state government, to come forward and help us live a normal life again."

Other problems in the area are clogged drains, lack of clean water supply and wild shrubs growing in the premises. — Bernama
