KOTA KINABALU: Metrojaya Bhd, a leading homegrown retailer, opened its first department store in the heart of Kota Kinabalu at the Suria Sabah Shopping Mall here today.

Kota Kinabalu mayor Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim said the opening of Metrojaya in Kota Kinabalu was timely as it has been one of the fastest growing cities in this region.

"Apart from becoming an anchor tenant to Suria Sabah, Metrojaya will be providing career opportunities and training in retail skills to the local labour market," he said at the opening of the store.

Metrojaya chairman Datuk Ahmad Khairummuzammil said the company's entry into Sabah under the current challenging economic environment was an indication of its confidence in the state market.

"With Metrojaya's 30 over years of experience in operating various retail businesses, we are confident that our pioneer store in Sabah will do well," Ahmad said.

"Metrojaya has always been about providing lifestyle fashion and upmarket home products at affordable prices to consumers," he said.

With the opening of its latest outlet in Sabah, Metrojaya now has a total of eight department stores nationwide.
Speaking to reporters later, Ahmad said Kota Kinabalu was chosen because of the strategic location and the availability of investment opportunity in the newly completed Suria Sabah Shopping Mall.

Asked whether Metrojaya has plans to open department stores in other parts of Sabah, he said: "We are always looking for good locations". - Bernama
