KUALA LUMPUR: Twelve more tenders for the ongoing Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project, worth RM1.1 billion, will be awarded by Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp).

Director of the Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley National Key Economic Area at Pemandu, Datuk Ahmad Suhaili Idrus, said 80% of the tender packages have been awarded as at October 2013.

“The mega-sized project is creating business opportunities to the private sector, as the MRT is the largest infrastructure project undertaken by the government, after the Kuala Lumpur International Airport,” he told the “Urban Transportation and MRT Summit” here yesterday.

MRT Corp CEO Datuk Wira Azhar Abdul Hamid said targets for the opening of phases of the Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line still remain intact — phase one between Sungai Buloh and Semantan by December 2016 and the line from Semantan to Kajang by July 2017.

“As at October, the progress rate for the overall elevated and underground project hit 30.17% which was in line with its target,” Azhar said.

He added the project faced shortages of skilled labour and equipment. — Bernama
