IPOH: The Perak Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has criticised state government departments and agencies over their failure to closely monitor the progress of building constructions under their purview.

Its chairman Datuk Seri Raja Ahmad Zainuddin Raja Omar said their dependence on a third party to monitor such projects had been identified as among the causes of project delays and cost overruns.

"Government agencies should discard this kind of attitude as every project needs to be completed on schedule to prevent wastage. All projects should be monitored on a frequent basis," he told reporters after chairing the Perak PAC meeting here on Wednesday, May 25.

Raja Ahmad Zainuddin admitted that only a handful of agencies may be capable of monitoring projects alongside the Public Work Department.

He said that they should take measures to create technical units to monitor their own buildings which were under construction or those which were already occupied.

"We don't want public funds to be wasted due to failure on the part of a contractor to complete a project on schedule," he said, adding that from now on the PAC would step up monitoring of government construction projects. — Bernama
