KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry has audited 55,000 buildings in 10,000 schools nationwide to enable remedial works on the defects on affected parts to be carried out, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

While assuring the government will not practice favouritism, he said the ministry was aware of the need to improve educational infrastructure and facilities, regardless of location and type of school.

"We had completed the audit and will determine which schools need immediate attention.

"I can assure you that we have an audit benchmark. We hope to solve major problems faced by schools within the next few years," he said when responding to a supplementary question from P. Kamalanathan (BN-Hulu Selangor) during question time at the Dewan Rakyat here on Wednesday, Oct 20.

To Kamalanathan's orginal question, Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said that the audit discovered that 3% of the school buildings inspected suffered severe damage and required immediate attention while 5% had faulty electrical wiring.

On rural school utilities, he said 564 water supply projects worth RM197.7 million were being implemented this year while 641 electricity projects,
including 140 solar hybrid projects, costing RM1.87 billion were installed since 2007.

"The 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP) will continue to focus on school utilities to ensure that all schools get clean water and electricity supplies," he said.

To a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (PKR-Permatang Pauh) who wanted to know whether the ministry had set a one-year target to provide basic facilities to rural schools, the minister said: "If we have a wand, God willing, it can be completed within a year. But like
other ministries, the provision is not enough, it should be bigger. Thus, priority must be set.

"We will cooperate with the Rural and Regional Development Ministry to provide water supply in rural areas. I am confident that within five years under the 10MP, we may be able to solve most of the problems."

He said the ministry would spend RM8.85 billion to implement development projects under the 10MP, of which RM5.36 billion would be used to continue projects from the Ninth Malaysia Plan.

The rest of the provision is for new projects such infrastructure improvements, building upgrade, and constructing additional buildings and new schools, he said.

In his written answer to Teresa Kok (DAP-Seputeh), he said the relocation of two Chinese national type schools (SJKC) in Johor had been completed and were opened this year, namely SJKC Tai Hong (from Kota Tinggi to Taman Impian Emas) and SJKC Pai Tze (Bukit Serampang to Setia Eco Gardens).

He said the relocation of SJKC Bandar Bukit Sentosa, Bukit Beruntung, Selangor; SJKC Pay Fong 1, Crimson, Krubong, Melaka; and SJKC Kiow Min, Taman Perkasa, Alor Gajah had been approved by the local councils while for SJKC Pumpong, Alor Setar, piling work was being carried out and for SJKC Tung Hwa, Seremban, site preparation was progressing.

He said for the rest of the schools, the board of governors of the schools were still in the process of acquiring land, preparing development plans or
submitting applications to the local authorities. -- Bernama
