SHAH ALAM: Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said on Tuesday, Nov 9 that the state government supported the federal government's Greater Kuala Lumpur plan because it would benefit Selangor as well.

He said Greater KL, which covered the Klang Valley, was an important location for national economic development compared to the development regions and corridors in the other states.

Abdul Khalid was replying to a question from Dr Shafie Abu Bakar (PAS-Bangi) in the state assembly on the impact of the Greater KL plan on the economy of Selangor.

He said the multiplier effect of Greater KL would be five-fold compared to that of the other development corridors, and referred to the projected investment of about RM650 billion in the long term and the estimated 2.5 million jobs to be created.

Saying that the Light Rail Transit and Mass Rapid Transit would be the catalyst for the Greater KL development, he said the infrastructure would attract investors to set up their office and operations in the Klang Valley.

Abdul Khalid said it was anticipated that Greater KL would attract investments in the knowledge sector as well as the services sector in such support areas as the medical, financial hub and Islamic finance hub sub-sectors.

He said that in the implementation of the National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs), the Selangor menteri besar and state secretary had been invited to sit on the steering committee.

During a break in the sitting, Abdul Khalid was asked whether he supported the proposed Menara Warisan project in Greater KL.

He said: "I have not seen the facts and figures from PNB (Permodalan Nasional Berhad). The project is over RM5 billion. I want to see the likely occupancy rate and how they want to market the office space." -- Bernama
