GEORGE TOWN (July 14): The cardiologist in Penang who hit the news after being caught by the local authorities for jogging on the second day of the movement control order back in March 19 has changed his please to guilty at the Magistrate’s Court here today, reported FMT.

He originally pleaded not guilty to violating disease control laws by jogging (a non-essential activity) at a park here.

Magistrate Jamaliah Abd Manap ordered Dr Ong Hean Teik, 61 to pay a fine of RM1,000 under Rule 3(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020, reported the news portal.

Meanwhile, deputy public prosecutor Yazid Mustaqim Roslan said a second charge against Ong of preventing city council staff from carrying out their duty had been dropped.

Ong was seen in a video (that went viral) arguing with the city council personnel when told that he was breaking the MCO rules.

Ong had claimed trial to the charge under Section 186 of the Penal Code which carries two years’ jail or a fine of RM10,000 upon conviction.

During mitigation, Ong’s lawyer Hasnal Rezua Merican said Ong was a law-abiding citizen and the jogging during MCO was his first offence.
