DHAKA (Bangladesh): The death toll from the building collapse on Tuesday night in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka's Tejgaon Area rose to 23 on Thursday June 3 morning as rescue workers pulled out more bodies from the rubble.
Fire services duty officer Ataur Raman told Xinhua news agency, that rescuers retrieved 23 bodies till Thursday morning, while fire-fighters rescued 10 people Wednesday. Five residents of tin-shed houses ruined by the collapsed building are believed trapped under tonnes of rubble.
The five-storey building collapsed at around 11 p.m. local time on Tuesday night and fell on several tin-shed houses nearby.Raman could not confirm the cause of the collapse of the building. He said a road was being constructed near the building and the construction works could have contributed to the collapse.
State Minister for Housing and Public Works Abdul Mannan Khan who visited the site on Wednesday said the building was built without adhering to the building code.
According to local media, it was a three-storey building until 2001 and later renovated into a five-storey structure. The construction of the top floor was completed just a weak ago. -- Bernama
