KUALA LUMPUR: Old Malay villages can only be gazetted as heritage villages provided the beneficiaries or landowners unanimously agree to do so, the Dewan Rakyat was told on Monday, Oct 24.
Deputy Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Maglin Dennis D'Cruz said the government has no power to compel beneficiaries or landowners to proclaim their villages as heritage villages.
He said the National Heritage Act 2005 states that consent of landowners was required before a site or building could be gazetted as a heritage.
"We plan to convert certain villages to heritage villages but we face a daunting task as we could not reach some landowners or beneficiaries... maybe they have changed their addresses," he added.
He said the Heritage Department also received several applications from beneficiaries and landowners, who wanted their villages gazetted as heritage villages, but they have to fulfil certain criteria, including conservation of heritage or tradition values. — Bernama
