ALAPPUZHA (India): India's first 'water theme'-based IT Park, offering nature-friendly and stress-free working atmosphere, has been given the status of Special Economic Zone (SEZ) by the Indian government, Press

The decision was made by the Board of Approvals of Commerce in New Delhi which met earlier this week, according to the state IT Department here.

Of the total 100 acres of the park near Ambalappuzha town, on the banks of the picturesque Vembanad Lake, 33 acres will get SEZ status. This is the first IT park to come up on the banks of a lake with the buildings to be rented out to IT companies overlooking the waters.

Construction began in April 2009 and the first phase of the infrastructure work is to be completed by June 2010.
According to Infopark Chief Executive Officer, Siddhartha Bhattacharya the first block of buildings would be completed by April 2011 with a capacity to accommodate 1000 IT/ITES professionals.

Power transformers, access roads, drains and boat jetty, land reclamation and development and water treatment plant would be some of the facilities which would be developed as part of the basic infrastructure. - Bernama
