TAWAU (Sabah): The residents of Kampung Titingan, whose houses were razed by fire on Jan 31 are not allowed to build new houses in the area. Sabah Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan said this was because the area was included in a development plan for Kampung Titingan.

The Tawau Municipal Council would be monitoring the area to ensure no more squatter houses would be built there, he told reporters after visiting the area on Feb 1.

A total of 449 people from 64 families were left homeless after the fire which broke out around noon yesterday destroyed their houses. Forty of the affected families are foreigners and the rest are locals.

Tawfiq, who is also Apas assemblyman, also reminded residents in highly-populated areas to take precautions to prevent untoward incidents like fire.- Bernama
