KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 15): The Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (MCCM) plans to build 100,000 houses catering specifically for the middle-income group, said its president Tuan Syed Ali Alattas.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference here on Tuesday, he said the medium cost housing project targets those with a household income of between RM3500-RM7000 and who find it difficult to own homes.
He said as a nation, the government has tackled the low-cost housing issue but the problem now was providing for the middle income group, a majority of whom are small entrepreneurs and fresh graduates.
"The houses, which include terrace units and apartments, will be sold at a price not exceeding RM200,000 each, within five identified zones, north, east coast, central, south and Sabah & Sarawak," he added.
Syed Ali said this is possible as after talking to contractors, the average cost of building 100 units of a two-floor 1,400 square feet terrace house is about RM160,000, including infrastructure.
He said the MCCM is talking to state governments for land at a nominal or low price for the project.
"One state has given us a piece of land, and in Johor it would be built on land we own," he added, with 30% of the houses reserved for non-Bumiputeras.
Dewan Syarikah Bhd, a company under the MCCM would be the developer for all the projects.
The MCCM is confident that the houses will be built on time as the company has up to 16,000 contractors.
"From April this year, we are going to build 10,000 medium-cost terrace homes. In the first phase, 86 units out of 220 will be built at Bandar Uda Utama, in Johor Bahru," he said.
Meanwhile, The MCCM will also organise a "Carnival and Rakyat Roadshow" which offers several programmes. These include Fund Raising and Management (Establishment of an Entrepreneurs Fund and Bumiputera Investment), Medium Cost Housing Development and Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Development. — Bernama
