NIBONG TEBAL: The Penang government should not feel threatened over a plan by the Kedah government to build an international airport in Kulim, said Penang Umno liaison chief Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman.

He said the proposed airport would not only benefit Kedah but also positively impact three districts in Penang and northern Perak.

“Lim Guan Eng [Penang chief minister] need not worry because he has proven his capability in spurring the economic growth of Penang.

“Many tourists from all over the world visit Penang, via the Penang International Airport each year, and similarly, for cargo, as well.

“We all know, Penang is renowned internationally. In fact, it has its own market,” he told reporters after launching the finance ministry’s Mobile Community Transformation Centre here yesterday.

Zainal Abidin was commenting on newspaper reports that Lim would ask for two airports for Penang if Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir’s proposal for a second international airport was approved.

Lim said the location in Kulim created many issues as it was so close to Penang, while Kedah already had airports in Langkawi and Alor Setar.

He was also reported as saying that Penang, which has international connections and network, was the biggest recipient of foreign direct investment.
