KUALA LUMPUR: A local soil engineering company, Nehemiah Reinforced Soil Sdn Bhd, is inviting entries for a design competition from engineering, construction management and architectural students of local public and private tertiary institutions.

"As an engineering company, we want to encourage our younger generation of professionals to be innovative in their thinking, while applying their knowledge to solve a real-life situation," its general manager, Tan Cheng Chong, said on May 19.

Such a competition would allow them an opportunity to exercise their resourcefulness and apply the principles of design that they have learnt, he added.

For the inaugural competition this year, students will be asked to provide a solution to a real-life situation involving the construction of a highway through steep mountainous terrain in a remote part of Sabah, where a section of the highway passes through a valley of 20m in depth spanning a length of 200m.

All engineering and architectural designs, which must include a built-up model, will be put on display and judged according to a set of criteria. Judging will be held on Aug 20 at the University Tunku Abdul Rahman campus in Setapak here. Participation can be either by as a team or as individuals.

However, Tan said team effort for such a project was strongly encouraged as it would have better chances of winning. Each team can be assisted by a lecturer or tutor as a mentor.

The first prize comes with a trophy and a cash of RM5,000 while the second and third prizes are RM3,000 and RM2,000 each, respectively.

The deadline for submission of registration form is May 28.

Details of the competition can be obtained from the company's website at www.nehemiahwalls.com. -- Bernama
