MELBOURNE: A country town in the state of New South Wales is offering houses to rent for just A$1 (RM3.08) a week to "keep the town alive".

There are still plenty of jobs available in the town of Trundle but no one to do them, Trundle Tree Change spokeswoman Cherie Quade told the ABC.

"The idea (is) that they can come to Trundle, not pay a fortune for rent, bring families and just keep the town alive really," she said.

"We've had a fairly tough few years with the drought and while Trundle isn't dying, it just needs a little bit of re-invigorating."

Farmer Ben Kerin, who is offering to rent out an empty farmhouse, said there was an amazing sense of community in the town of 500 people.

"There's some great houses — some beautiful old places," he said. "It was a shame to see no-one living in them and they deteriorate." — Bernama
