KUALA LUMPUR: Eco World Development Group Bhd, which walked away with The Edge Malaysia Notable Achievement Award 2014 at The Edge Malaysia Property Excellence Awards on Monday, recently held its first fundraising event for its newly-established foundation that seeks to help underprivileged Malaysians improve their quality of life.

Proceeds from the inaugural charity dinner 2014 on Oct 11 which totalled RM6.64 million was to fund its activities. The event was graced by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and his wife, Datin Seri Lee Sun Loo.

Eco World president and chief executive officer Datuk Chang Khim Wah said the Eco World Foundation focuses its efforts on promoting education, which is a key element in breaking the cycle of poverty facing many Malaysians.

With the foundation now in place, he said the group will be able to reach out to a larger group of people in need and provide assistance where appropriate.

“To say the setting up of the Eco World Foundation is a great achievement is an understatement as the group is fortunate to have been able to do this in such a short time since Eco World first started out in 2012,” Chang said at the launch of the foundation on Sept 24, which was attended by its guests, business associates, and students from 10 schools in Puchong, Selangor.

Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has been appointed as chairman of the Eco World Foundation.

“For a start, the foundation is launching the Student Aid Programme, which will encompass the adoption of around 3,000 schoolchildren of all ages from several states in the country,” said Chang.

The adoption will see the foundation providing basic school needs to these children.

“Education for the needy is a subject very close to my heart and that of the foundation. We believe that our children are our most important assets; they are the hope and future of the country and everyone deserves an opportunity to a better life,” said Lee.

Eco World was the “Powered by” sponsor to this year’s The Edge Kuala Lumpur Rat Race. The Edge’s cause in promoting English and financial literacy ties in with what Eco World firmly believes in, which is education.

Under the “Powered by” package, EcoWorld sent in six teams to the Rat Race which was held last month.
