SUBANG JAYA (Nov 17): The Empire Shopping Gallery (ESG) in Subang Jaya, Selangor has reopened on Wednesday, after months of repair and renovation works on the damages sustained by the building in an early morning gas explosion in September.

Following the incident that damaged 40 shops and injuring four people, the mall ceased operations on Sept 29 on the advice of the Fire and Rescue Services Department in the interest of public safety.

A new gas line system has been installed. It is linked to a master control with an after-hours gas cut-off where suction fans with gas sensors will automatically switch off gas supply in the event of a leak.

During the renovation works, development owner Mammoth Empire Holding Sdn Bhd also took the opportunity to add physical upgrades to the mall adding new facilities that include a new landscape, a wider driveway leading customers to an epoxy-finished car park as well as low-energy LED light fixtures for brighter lighting. A new glass-encased lift and a new LED wall panel at the concourse and ground floor entrance flashes the shopping gallery's latest events and promotions have also been added. Numerous tenants had also taken the opportunity to redesign their outlets.

"More than 90% of the tenants have reopened, while the remaining will be reopening once they have completed their renovations in a couple of weeks. The management has been working closely with our tenants and they are happy with the changes that have been made," said Empire Shopping Gallery general manager May Woo.

"We are fortunate that our relationship surpasses that of being just strictly landlord and tenant, but also one of mutual respect. ESG has always met the regulatory safety standards; however, we have opted to go above and beyond the local requirements to provide an even more comfortable and safe environment for our shoppers," she added.

Woo said the mall currently enjoys a 98% occupancy and. More retail and alfresco dining outlets are targeted to open before the year ends.

Empire Shopping Gallery has a gross built-up area of 600,000 sq ft with a net lettable area (NLA) of 350,000 sq ft. The mall opened in July featuring 180 stores offering international and domestic brands.
