Former surveyors share success stories

KUALA LUMPUR: Eight distinguished speakers, including Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok shared their insights on the surveying profession and how it can be a stepping stone to other high-profile careers, at the Galaxy of Surveying Stars seminar on March 16.

More than 160 guests, including practitioners and students attended the seminar organised by The Institution of Surveyors, Malaysia (ISM).

ISM president, associate professor Wan Maimun Wan Abdullah said she hoped the speakers’ experiences would inspire young Malaysians to take up surveying as a profession as it offers a foundation to other high-powered careers.

“All of them have arrived at a high level of achievement and were able to go beyond the borders of their professional backgrounds, using surveying as a foundation and platform to [advance] to more prestigious, high-profile careers. We have come a long way from when a surveyor will remain a surveyor for life,” she said at the seminar.

Speakers at the seminar included Sime Darby Bhd chief operating officer Datuk Abdul Wahab Maskan, Pan Malaysia Holdings Bhd chairman Datuk Yong Ming Sang, and Perdana Park City Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Lee Liam Chye.

Kelantan state assemblymen Datuk Mohd Alwi Che Ahmad, ICI Deco Paints Malaysia division chief financial officer Ilya Meshcheryakov, former ISM president Datuk Prof A Rahman Abdullah, and Jaya Haricon Sdn Bhd executive chairman Datuk Ishak Ismail also spoke at the seminar.

All eight speakers are qualified and registered surveyors.

Lee and Abdul Wahab shared their personal success stories in property development after a career in surveying, while Yong spoke on the importance of surveying as a base knowledge.

ISM is the professional body representing the surveying profession in Malaysia and consists of four divisions.

The divisions are property consultancy valuation surveying, geomatic and land surveying, quantity surveying, and building surveying.

As of March 2010, there are 5,119 surveyors registered with ISM.
