KUALA LUMPUR: Swiss-based global cement and aggregates supplier HOLCIM Malaysia Sdn Bhd (HOLCIM Malaysia) was awarded the international Eco-Label by the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia Bhd (Sirim).

The first cement manufacturer in Malaysia to receive the award, HOLCIM Malaysia won the honour for its Low Heat Cement and trademark Top Standard cements products which it manufactures.

HOLCIM Malaysia CEO Mahanama Ralapanawa said that this was a milestone for the company. "We are proud to be the first environmentally friendly cement manufacturer certified by Sirim. HOLCIM globally has always strived to go beyond providing high quality, safe and responsible manufactured cement, concrete and aggregates for the construction sectors.

"We are committed to perpetually improving, enhancing and revising our products to suit the changing lifestyle of Malaysians. Our being awarded the Sirim Eco-Label certification is a testament to our enduring commitment towards a sustainable future for Malaysia and the world," he said.

Ralapanawa said that HOLCIM Malaysia's Eco Label HOLCIM Top Standard and Low Heat Cement will be positively received in the industry. "The timing is perfect, there is a real need in every sector for high quality environmentally responsive cement, and HOLCIM is geared to provide strategic solutions to address these needs."

The Sirim Eco-Label is a government-accredited-and-approved voluntary, multiple-criteria based, third party certification programme in Malaysia that measures the sustainability of materials and products, of which it measures the preferability of the product within a category.

The label also officially certifies that the products carrying the label meet all environmental accreditation requirements in its product, delivery, application and its disposal.

Ralapanawa adds that it is also a big boost to the company's research and development team, as substantial funds had been invested on a regular basis. "This achievement is a synergistic example of effective and successful collaboration between our global offices involving an intuitive transfer of technologies and capabilities to the local team," he added.

Ralapanawa said that HOLCIM Malaysia will continue to support, encourage and contribute to the government's national ambitions for a low carbon economy. "By immediately conserving resources, reducing consumption and using environmentally friendly and conscientious materials we can ensure the fulfilment of our responsibilities to the next generation."

Formerly known as Tenggara Cement, HOLCIM Malaysia is one of the world's leading cement companies with a vast global network of knowledge and experience. Located in Pasir Gudang, the company produces various types of cement products and ready-mix concrete with annual sales of over RM202 million.
