SEREMBAN (Nov 6): Seremban Municipal Council (MPS) has issued more than 100 notices to traders at the Pasar Besar Seremban for failure to keep the premises clean.
Council licensing and urban services department director Iskandar Arifin said compliance to cleanliness rules was low in the wet market.
“Only about 10% have followed our advice and met the requirements, in the disposal of waste, for example,” he told The Malaysian Insider.
He added that the wet market had 840 traders – the biggest number of traders in the state.
“The only way to address this issue is by educating them and getting them to change their ways."
He said awareness campaigns were first conducted, followed by advice to traders with unsatisfactory cleanliness at their stalls. Notice came next.
“When they fail to clean up, we will issue compounds,” he said.
Those compounded who failed to clean up would see their permits cancelled, he said.
However, no compounds have yet been issued this year.
It is understood that council and health officers conduct weekly checks at the market.
The Malaysian Insider had reported that there was a big rat problem in the popular wet market.
Sixty rats were caught during the Kawalan Tikus monthly campaign on Nov 4, and 231 rats were caught between January and September.
During the visit, The Malaysian Insider saw rats running everywhere in the wet market. Some stalls had also not been cleaned up at the close of the business day, leaving offal and waste out in the open to attract rodents and other pests. -- The Malaysian Insider
