GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Development Corporation (PDC) will ask the Institute of Public Works (IKRAM) to inspect a block of flats in Lengkok Mahsuri, Bayan Baru which is said to be tilting.

Pantai Jerejak State Assemblyman Sim Tze Tzin said, a structural inspection would be carried out on all 11 blocks of the four-storey flats built in 1982.

Commenting on a Bernama report, he said, initial inspection showed that the problem was not structural but could be caused by a sinking of the earth due to water retention below the ground surface.

According to Sim, the 30-year-old flats were built on former rice fields and the damage was not life-threatening. He added, the PDC had also been requested to urgently repair leaking water tanks, provide dustbins and trim the trees in the compound.

Sharifah Syed Ibrahim, 38, a resident, complained that a crack on the floor of her house prevented her from closing the door.
She said pieces of ceiling kept falling and they had been facing this problem for more than 10 years.-- Bernama
