PENANG: The Penang government has opened tender for companies interested in the renovation, refurbishment and management of Hotel Crag in Bukit Bendera here. Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the state government intended to redevelop the hotel to attract more tourists, both locals and foreigners, to the hill.

"Hotel Crag was the first hotel to be built atop Bukit Bendera in 1929 and it was closed in 1977. We plan to rebuild it," he told reporters here on May 26.

He said the government had opened a tender earlier in June last year, but it was cancelled following some technical and financial problems. "This is the second time we are opening tender and we have four main
conditions that companies interested in bidding should comply with," he said.

Lim said the hotel would be leased to the company selected to carry out the renovations and the land would remain under the ownership of state government. The company to run the hotel would be selected based on its lease price bid and its capability to develop the hotel into one of international standing.

Tenders would be opened to international companies as well, and those keen should have a paid-up capital of RM350,000 (US$100,000) and be of sound financial standing, Lim added.-- Bernama
