KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 31 (Bernama) -- The government will pay more than RM5
million as consolation to 134 squatters in Penang who are directly affected by
the Ipoh-Padang Besar Electrified Rail Double-Tracking Project.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said today the payment would be
made as soon as possible.
"For house owners living on their own land, the consolation payment is being
processed and will be disbursed soon," he said in a statemnt here today.
He said that where applicable, the payment would be made together with the
compensation under the land acquisition Act 1960.
Ong said the majority the affected residents in Kedah and Perak had received
the consolation payments.

"The government takes into account the interests of all the residents
directly affected by the project. The appeals and feedback from community
leaders and Barisan Nasional component party leaders in Penang have been
considered," he said.
The RM12.485 bilion project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2012.
It is part of the master plan to develop the public transportation system in
the country.
Work on the project by MMC-Gamuda JV is in progress in Perak, Kedah, Penang
and Perlis.
