KUALA LUMPUR: The SBC-Taylor's 2009 Architectural Design Award competition took on a "green" theme this year as participants had to design a sustainable community recycling centre for a non-governmental organisation (NGO) of their choice of between three and five storeys.
Students were required to do their own research on current and emerging trends, contributing ideas and solutions to design the green project.
In the end, it was Yeap Xe Wei, 21 who took home RM10,000 and a trophy for her project "The Vermi Recycle & Community Centre" which the judges found demonstrated good space utilisation while incorporating green building features.
Jointly organised by construction and property developer SBC Corp Bhd (SBC) and Taylor's College for the 3rd time since 2006, the competition is only for Taylor's College School of Architecture, Building and Design (SADB) students as part of their final semester in the Diploma in Architectural Technology programme. There were eight finalists from the 42 entries received.
Certainly it is no small feat for these young aspiring architects as judging included clarity of ideas, articulation of design, technical considerations and one critical requirement - the proposed recycling centre must incorporate green elements that meet the standards of the Green Building Index, which was Malaysia's recently launched green rating tool.
"We want to give our future generations an early exposure, awareness and knowledge in green construction and sustainable buildings," SBC managing director Sia Teong Heng said during the award presentation.
"We believe in building the best for our future, which is why we initiated the green building theme for this contest," he said.
