KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Tong Kooi Ong, chairman of Sunrise Bhd and The Edge Communications Sdn Bhd, has been appointed a non-independent and non-executive director of UEM Land Holdings Bhd, according to a statement from UEM Land said.

Tong's entry into UEM Land follows the government-linked company's acquisition of Sunrise to create Malaysia's largest listed property development company.

UEM Land had made a conditional voluntary general offer in November last year to acquire Sunrise at RM2.80 per share or about RM1.39 billion. The merged entity will have a landbank of about 12,000 acres and a combined asset base of about RM5 billion.

In Malaysia, The Edge Communications publishes The Edge, The Edge Financial Daily and Personal Money, among other publications. In the region, Tong's media interests are represented by The Edge Publishing Pte Ltd, which publishes The Edge Singapore, a business and investment weekly newspaper.

Tong is also chairman of the board and chairman of the executive committee of Taiga Building Products Ltd, which is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

His appointment took effect last Friday, Feb 25.
