KUALA LUMPUR: Giant, a hypermarket retailer under GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, is set to open a store in Sibu, by the middle of next year.

The ground breaking for the RM12 million hypermarket project will be held Saturday Jan 23 and is expected to be ready in June next year. It will be the first Giant hypermarket in Sarawak.

"It is timely that we set up this hypermarket in Sibu to cater to the demand for our modern retail concept and for residents of this booming coastal town," the marketing director of GCH, Ho Mun Hao said in a statement on Friday Jan 22. According to Ho, the new hypermarket will create more than 200 new job opportunities.

"At the same time, there will also be business opportunities for local traders and entrepreneurs who can take up tenancy in the hypermarket complex," he explained.

He added that the store will mainly focus on promoting Sarawak's agro-based and food related industries, whose products will simultaneously be distributed to all Giant stores, nationwide. -- Bernama
