KUALA LUMPUR: Known for its starring role in 2010’s award-winning film The King’s Speech, 33 Portland Place is being sold for an expected £25 million (RM132 million) to £30 million despite not having an exact price guide. The sale, conducted by Knight Frank LLP, will be through legal tenders by Sept 16, 2014.
“It is one of the most significant and important individual houses that will have been made available for sale in recent history within prime central London,” said Christian Lock-Necrews, head of Knight Frank Marylebone.
The large freehold mansion is located in the City of Westminster, between Regent’s Park and Portland Place tube stations, both of which are roughly 500m away. It is approximately half a mile within the boutique shops and restaurants in Marylebone, which has seen the biggest price growth in prime central London with 14.9% in the 12 months leading to May 2014. The mansion is also near the world-renowned shops of Oxford Street and Bond Street, and all of West End’s entertainment amenities.
The property offers 19,803 sq ft of living space with the adjoining house adding another 1,666 sq ft to the estate. The mansion comprises five storeys, including a lower ground floor. It boasts 21 bedrooms, nine reception rooms and the world’s only hydraulic wall.
The 238-year-old mansion is being placed on the market by current owner Edward Davenport for legal compensation. The property was designed by the Adams brothers in 1776 and it still retains some classical features of that era. It was also famous for its celebrity-filled attendance and extravagant parties.
According to Knight Frank, a purchaser would be able to modernise the property to his exact needs without paying a premium for someone else’s previous work.
