KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 10): The east coast Malaysian state of Kelantan will soon have another five-star hotel. The Swiss-based Mӧvenpick Hotels and Resorts will manage the five-star Mӧvenpick Hotel Kota Bharu. Usahama Seri Cemerlang Sdn Bhd is the landowner and developer of the project which has a gross development value of RM350 million.

This was announced yesterday at a signing ceremony between Usahama Seri Cemerlang Sdn Bhd and Mӧvenpick Hotels & Resorts.

“The signing of the agreement today marks yet another milestone for Usahasama Seri Cemerlang Sdn Bhd, a fully bumiputera-owned company from Kelantan. We are proud to partner with Mӧvenpick Hotels & Resorts to create a distinctive hotel that will bring a new luxury hospitality experience to Kota Bharu,” said Usahasama chairwoman, Tengku Datin Fatihah Almarhum Sultan Ibrahim, in a statement.

Scheduled to open in 2018, Mӧvenpick Hotel Kota Bharu will be built on on a 1.177-acre parcel on Jalan Telipot in the heart of Kota Bharu, fronting the Kelantan Sultan’s residence and palace. Incorporating Islamic motifs and elements of green architecture, the hotel will offer a total of 452 rooms.

The hotel will feature an array of facilities such as a rooftop helipad, banquet hall, a restaurant and cafe, boutiques and retail outlets, his and hers pools, a gym and spa, a club lounge, business centre and three floors of parking bays.

“With its undeniable Islamic concept in physical structure and layout, we see this as an opportunity to present Islam in a modern way and as a vehicle to improve the knowledge of Islam – appropriate to strengthen the status of Kelantan as the ‘Corridor of Mecca’,” added Tengku Datin Fatihah.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts President & CEO, Jean Gabriel Pérès said that as “the first genuinely five-star hotel in Kota Bharu, Mӧvenpick Hotel Kota Bahru is destined to be the hospitality flagship for boosting tourism to Kelantan, promoting the economy, and developing local talent for Malaysia’s thriving hospitality industry”.
