SEPANG (Feb 2): Independent railway assessors have confirmed that the KL International Airport (KLIA) aerotrain system is operating as intended, with service disruptions observed since commissioning being those commonly encountered during the early operational phase of complex rail systems.

Earlier this week, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the MACC is free to investigate the aerotrain project based on existing law and with sufficient evidence.

Despite the four disruptions in its four months of operations, chief airports officer Bryan John Thompson said the aerotrain’s operational service availability performance has been above 98%, save for its dip to 95.

MAHB said it has received data and assurance from the contractors about the train, but "the information provided has not instilled sufficient confidence in the current reliability of the aerotrain system".

"All three incidents occurred within the defect liability period (DLP), during which the contractors are fully responsible for rectification, performance, and reliability," MAHB said, adding it has convened multiple joint technical meetings with both Alstom and IPJV’s senior management to identify contributing factors and expedite corrective measures.

The airport operator said the latest disruption was "disappointing" given that the aerotrain system had undergone a stringent testing, commissioning, and certification process prior to its launch.

MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said while there were no disruptions to overall airport operations or passenger transfers between the main and satellite terminals, the airport operator “expects better” from its partners.

Azmy will oversee business development, joint-venture management, strategic land, corporate strategy, and sustainability.

The RM456 million project has faced several delays, with the previous targeted operational date being Jan 31 this year.
