KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu Court has applied for the construction site of a new court complex to be closer to the city.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Joseph Pairin Kitingan said the site allocated in Likas Bay, near here, was inappropriate and inconvenient for the public.

"Within the context of providing better service to the people, the site that the Justice Department was offered was a little too far. So they are looking around near the city centre which we (state government) will consider," he told reporters after visiting the current court complex here on March 8.

Pairin said a new court complex was necessary since the current compound no longer had enough space for extension or additional new courtrooms and storage of files.

"The court building is already congested... we can already see how uncomfortable it is for the increasing number of judges and staff to work here.

"Therefore, I believe it is important that we should see to their application in order to improve efficiency in the judiciary," he added. -- Bernama
