KUALA LUMPUR: Land owners in Kampung Baru are reminded not to be confused over the RM4 million payment promised by the government if they were to accept the proposed re-development concept plan for the area.

Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said the actual amount of payment for them would depend on the size of their respective land.

"If the total value of the land is RM20 billion and it is divided among about 5,000 land owners, undoubtedly, they will each get about RM4 million.

"However, we must realise that of the 5,000 owners, some have only a small piece of land, and some have larger. So, it does not necessarily mean that each will get RM4 million," he said when opening Datuk Keramat Lake Garden here on Feb 18.

Also present were his deputy Datuk M Saravanan and City Mayor Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail.

Raja Nong Chik said the RM4 million compensation was a random amount made in describing the potential development of Kampung Baru.

Prior to this, the land owners in Kampung Baru were reported to become instant millionaires as they stand to receive up to RM4 million each upon accepting the re-development concept plan proposed by the government.

Such payment was possible because the value of the 80ha of land in Kampung Baru was estimated at over RM20 billion.

At a press conference later, Raja Nong Chik also said the proposed re-development concept would preserve the elements and characteristic of a Malay traditional village, but with a modern touch.

He said the ministry would convene a meeting with the stakeholders, especially the land owners, in Kampung Baru pertaining to the matter after the Cabinet gave its green light on the proposed re-development concept.

The Cabinet was expected to make the decision on the proposed concept in two months, he said, adding that the ministry would also set up a government-owned organisation to manage and supervise the development in Kampung Baru. -- Bernama
