KUALA LUMPUR: Main board-listed Malton Bhd has appointed Chong Wan Ping, 53, as its managing director (MD), according to the company in a statement to Bursa Malaysia On Feb 3.

The company did not have a position for a MD before this, according to its website.

Chong graduated with an honour's degree in Civil and Structural Engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology in the UK in 1979.

Upon graduation, he joined the Malaysian Public Works Department as a civil engineer for two years and spent another two years in engineering consultancy before venturing out on his own in 1983 in the construction business.

For the past 30 years, among his other positions, he had been the owner and founder of Teknik Cekap Sdn Bhd, which had built the Goldhill Plaza, The Renaissance and New World Hotels in Kuala Lumpur. Chong joined three public-listed companies in Malaysia involved in property development, civil engineering and building construction and the oil & gas industry as a senior management member and holding directorships. During his tenure with these companies, he had led the completion of mega fast track projects (property development, building, civil & structural, geotechnical and foundation, marine engineering).

Prior to his recent return to Malaysia, he spent five years in the Middle East and India, leading some mega civil and building projects.
