SINGAPORE: CapitaLand Ltd’s Gurney Plaza mall in Penang has been awarded the Green Mark Gold by the Singapore Building and Construction Authority (BCA).
It is the first overseas Green Mark Gold for Singapore-based CapitaLand and one of the first malls in Malaysia to be awarded the green building rating by the BCA.
CapitaLand also earned the Green Mark Champion Award at the BCA Awards ceremony on May 24 for its having received 65 Green Mark awards to date — including nine provisional ones — that include 51 awards in Singapore, 11 in China, two in Vietnam and one in Malaysia.
“CapitaLand is honoured to receive the BCA Green Mark Champion Award in recognition of the Group’s relentless effort to realise its goal as a top global green developer,” said Liew Mun Leong, president and CEO of CapitaLand group, in a statement.
“Being an environmentally sustainable company is a natural extension of our credo of ‘Building People’. CapitaLand is committed to be a good corporate citizen and to building a greener future, not just for this generation, but for generations to come.”

Gurney Plaza boasts an estimated energy savings of 1.5 million kWh/year and an estimated water savings of 60,648 cu m/year. Other green features in the mall include activated carbon filters, ultra violet bacteria eradication light and silencers installed in the mall’s exhaust systems to minimise air and noise pollution. High-performance energy efficient lights are also fitted in the carpark to reduce energy consumption.
Underground water and rainwater harvesting systems are also included and used for the cooling tower, make-up water and for toilet flushing. A refuse recycling programme has been implemented where paper, plastic, glass and metal are collected and sent to recycling centres. Tenants are encouraged to participate in the recycling programme and are constantly reminded about being environmentally friendly through briefings and circulars.
Gurney Plaza is located on popular Gurney Drive in Penang and is about 3km north-west of the George Town city centre. The 9-storey complex with two basement levels has a net lettable area of 872,406 sq ft. The occupancy rate as at Dec 31, 2011 stood at 98.5% with key tenants such as Parkson, Golden Screen Cinemas and Cold Storage.
