处于一个没有四季的国家内，马来西亚建筑物不受极端气候变化带来的冲击，但常年的高温、大雨和潮湿，还是对建筑物不利。 Wayne Restoration and Engineering私人有限公司总裁Kuan You Wai指出，白天与夜晚的温差会导致建筑物结构热胀冷缩，造成如屋顶位移等问题。 “价值工程学盛行的环境中，没有伸缩接头的单片平面屋顶在大马非常普遍。如果这些屋顶是没有伸缩接头，屋顶的平面就会逐渐出现裂缝。而这些在建筑物外部的裂缝，会让雨水渗入建筑物内部。” 他解释道，价值工程学是当下建筑领域的流行词语，旨在通货膨胀、汽油价格攀升和消费税推高开销的环境中，把建筑成本降低。 “因此，只要达到建筑物最低的水平要求，发展商、工程师和建筑商往往都会尽力减少成本，以提高赚幅。” 他续称，气候变化造成的极端大雨也会影响国内建筑物的地基，因为这些地基大部分是由粘土支撑。 “在潮湿的环境中，粘土会变软和扩展，而在干旱的时候，它将收缩和变硬。因此粘土很常出现土壤流失、土崩和土地沉陷等现象。” 此外，燃烧石化燃料排放的污染物会造成酸雨，这也是个侵蚀建筑物外部的“毒药”。 尽管国内的降雨、土壤侵蚀、空气污染和潮湿问题越来越严重，但Kuan指出，在目前1984年建筑物规范条例下，并没有太多控制室内潮湿问题的条例。 “除了建筑物的地下楼层，1984年建筑物规范条例内并没有任何有关防潮的条款。而且，大学的土木工程课程也没有教导防水的科技。” 因此，Kuan认为，1984年建筑物规范条例应被检讨与提升，否则建筑领域就会采用更低成本、但对建筑环境有害的建筑决定。 他也呼吁地方政府关注建筑物潮湿问题，并采取更积极措施，检讨1984年建筑物规范条例和新建筑设计与原料的适用程度。 “在这个条例被强化之前，建筑师和工程师会继续采用国际的防潮标准，因为该条例内根本没有这方面的条款。” “但每个国家的情况都不一样，而且这些国际标准并非全已在大马测试过。因此，我国需要更深入的研究，来设立更强的建筑法规。” 该文章已刊登于2018年4月13日的EdgeProp.
