PENANG: Residents of Kampung Tanjong Tokong here want to send a memorandum to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak requesting federal government aid of RM300 million to redevelop the traditional village which is more than 250 years old.

Chairman of the village residents' association, Mohd Salleh Yahaya, said the memorandum, signed by 300 villagers, was expected to be handed over to Najib next week.

"We hope that our prime minister can help us, just like how the federal government is helping in the redevelopment of Kampung Baru in Kuala Lumpur," he told reporters.

He said the villagers also asked the prime minister to intervene in the effort to obtain appropriate compensation from the developer.

Mohd Salleh said that since Uda Holdings Berhad took over the village land in 1974, the kampung had been declared a squatter village.

"We were paid only RM1,000 to relocate," he said. -- Bernama
